Abson is a small village between Pucklechurch and Wick. The centre of the village is where the church is based. The name Abson derives from Abbotston, with the spelling and pronunciation changing over the centuries. This was the Abbot of Glastonbury, as the manor of Pucklechurch (Including Abson and other surrounding Villages) was given to the Abbot after the Murder of King Edmund at neighbouring Pucklechurch.
The buildings reflect it's agricultural and medieval history, with a mixture of historic properties and a small number of modern homes. Number of traditional cotswold-style stone cottages, which feature thick stone walls, also historic farmhouses which back date hundreds of years and were once part of the farming estates owned by Glastonbury Abbey.
Back to topI remember a job that I carried out at a cottage in Abson, It was the replacement of the existing consumer unit to provide a safe, modern electrical distribution system suitable for the new installation. The original consumer unit was carefully isolated and removed before installing a new 18th Edition compliant consumer unit complete with RCBO protection and surge protection, ensuring improved safety and compliance with current BS7671 wiring regulations.
Following installation, I reconnected and labelled all existing circuits, including power, lighting, extractor fans etc, ensuring each circuit was correctly terminated and tested. Full inspection and testing were carried out, including continuity, insulation resistance, polarity, earth fault loop impedance, RCD testing and verification of protective devices.
The replacement of consumer unit provides a reliable electrical supply for the premises while improving fault protection and reducing the risk of electrical hazards. The customer is then provided with an electrical installation certificate confirming the work complied with the latest wiring regulations.
Back to topAbson may be a small village, but it has a wide variety of properties. Around the village centre and church you'll find traditional cotswold stone cottages and farmhouses that date back hundreds of years, alongside a few modern homes. That mixture of old and new means every electrical installation is different.
Older properties often requires careful planning when carrying out house rewires or consumer unit upgrades. It's common to find wiring that's been extended or altered over many years, with installations that no longer meet today's electrical demands.
I regularly carry out:
